Quistes Renales

Simple renal cysts are fluid accumulations, usually in the renal parenchyma. These cysts are usually solitary and are found during an imaging study for another reason. The specific cause of renal cysts is currently unknown. It is associated with an increased risk of developing kidney cysts with age, and men are more commonly affected.

Occasionally, the patient may experience back pain, abdominal tightness, fever if the cyst is infected, sudden intense pain if the cyst ruptures, or kidney failure due to extrinsic compression of the urine outlet, among other symptoms.

Imaging studies, such as ultrasound or CT, are essential for diagnosis. The latter is very useful for distinguishing complex cysts. Most simple cysts are benign, but a low probability of complex cysts tends to develop malignantly.

In terms of treatment, there are different modalities, from close monitoring with imaging studies to laparoscopic resection of the renal cyst.

This disease must be distinguished from polycystic kidney disease, which is inherited from parents to children. In this case, there are multiple cysts in both kidneys, in addition to other extrarenal manifestations. Polycystic kidney disease is one of the most common causes of kidney failure.

We have the experience, resources, and technology to treat this disease. If you experience any of these symptoms, we invite you to schedule an appointment so we can provide a comprehensive approach and treatment.
